Also found in: Wikipedia 0.06 sec.

Hieron I (died 466 BC)

Tyrant of Syracuse 478–467 BC after his brother Gelon. He consolidated Syracusan influence in Sicily and extended it to the Italian mainland, defeating the Etruscans at sea in 474 BC. His wealth and prestige made Syracuse second only to Athens as a Greek cultural centre.

Hieron I won the crown at the Olympic games three times and was a patron of Pindar, Aeschylus, and Simonides.
