Jerome

Town in Yavapai County, west-central Arizona, located in the Black Hills 61 km/38 mi southwest of Flagstaff; population (1990) 400.

From the 1880s to the 1920s, Jerome was a boom town that grew rich on copper mining, and acquired a reputation for lawlessness. Its population peaked at 15,000 in 1890. After the closure of local mines in the 1950s, it became a centre for the arts and tourism.
