Higgs, Peter Ware (1929- )

English theoretical physicist who is best known for his prediction of an as yet undiscovered fundamental particle known as the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson, if discovered, will lead to our understanding of the origin of mass.

Born in Bristol, Higgs attended school in Birmingham before studying for his BSc in physics at King's College, London. Higgs remained at King's College and gained his PhD in 1955. After a brief spell at the University of London, Higgs moved to the University of Edinburgh in 1960, becoming professor of theoretical physics in 1980. His many prizes include the 1997 Paul Dirac medal and the 1998 European Physical Society High-Energy and Particle Physics Prize.
