In New Zealand, the generally mountainous land, many peaks rising to heights between 2,400-3,800 m/8,000-13,000 ft, most of which are in the South Island. Some of the lakes, fed by melting snow, are used for hydroelectric power; it is also a skiing, mountaineering, and tourist area.
