High River

High River

Town in southwestern Alberta, on the Highwood River, 55 km/34 mi south of Calgary; population (1996 est) 7,400. Surrounded by cattle ranches and wheat fields, it has always been an agricultural centre.

High River was founded in 1881 by Lafayette French and O H Smith as a ranching settlement, and became an important shipping point for cattle after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1892.
