Condition resulting from sudden exposure to low atmospheric pressure and reduced oxygen supply found at high altitudes (above 3,000 m/10,000 ft). Symptoms include nausea, breathlessness and exhaustion; with increasing altitude pulmonary and cerebral oedema may develop. It is treated with rest, analgesics, and when necessary, supplementary oxygen, diuretics and a return to lower altitudes.
