In mathematics, the abstract study of the structure of number systems and the properties of positive integers (whole numbers). For example, the theories of factors and prime numbers fall within this area, as does the work of mathematicians Giuseppe Peano (1858–1932), Pierre de Fermat, and Karl Gauss.
