Highland Park

District of Los Angeles, California, between Elysian Park (to the southwest) and South Pasadena (to the east), and 5 km/3 mi northeast of the city centre.

Founded during the property boom of the 1880s, Highland Park became the first area to be annexed to the city of Los Angeles. Today, it is an ethnically diverse middle-class community. The Southwest Museum, Heritage Square, and Occidental College (founded 1887) are all sited here.

Highland Park

City in Lake County, northeastern Illinois; population (1990) 30,600. Situated on Lake Michigan 40 km/25 mi north of Chicago, Highland Park is a residential suburb.

The Ravinia Music Festival, at which the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is resident during the summer months, is held on a large site in Highland Park originally set up in 1905 as an amusement park. Settled in 1834, the city was established as a wealthy suburb by the turn of the 20th century.

Highland Park

City in Wayne County, southeastern Michigan, a residential and industrial suburb surrounded by Detroit; population (1990) 20,100. It was the site of Henry Ford's original plant for mass-producing the Model T car (1910).

Production of Ford cars in Highland Park ended in 1927 when the Model T was discontinued, and most operations were transferred to Dearborn (River Rouge). However, there is still a Ford tractor plant here. Highland Park was also the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation from 1925 until its move to Auburn Hills in the early 1990s. This development, in conjunction with the general decline in the US automobile industry caused the city severe economic hardship in the 1980s and 1990s. Highland Park Community College (1918) is sited here.

Residential neighbourhood of St Paul, Minnesota, southwest of the city centre, Macalaster-Groveland, and Summit Avenue. This affluent community is situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

Borough in Middlesex County, east-central New Jersey, across the Raritan River from New Brunswick; population (1990) 13,300.

Highland Park was established in 1667 on the site of an American Indian village. A Revolutionary War skirmish between the troops of Washington and Cornwallis took place here. Primarily residential, Highland Park has a printing plant and manufactures metal products and sweets.

Municipal park and adjacent residential neighbourhood covering an area of some 146 hectares/360 acres in the East End of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Highland Park, site of Pittsburgh's zoo, is located 9 km/5.5 mi northeast of the Golden Triangle and immediately north of East Liberty. The suburb adjoining the park is an affluent residential community cut off from other areas on three sides, and was named after the Chicago district of Highland Park.

Highland Park

Town in Dallas County, northeastern Texas; population (1990) 8,700. This affluent residential area, 6 km/4 mi north of downtown Dallas, borders to the south on University Park, but is otherwise bounded on all sides by the city.
