Hikmet, Nazim (1902–1963)

Turkish poet. Acclaimed since his death as a revolutionary hero, he was educated at Moscow University and was imprisoned in Turkey for his activities as a communist propagandist. His much-translated poems, which were banned in Turkey during his lifetime, include Memleketimden insan manzaralari/Portraits of People from My Land and Şeyh Bedreddin destani/The Epic of Shayk Bedreddin 1936, about a religious revolutionary in 15th-century Anatolia.
