Hilanderas, Las

    0.06 sec.

Hilanderas, Las

Painting by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez about 1656 (Prado, Madrid). It is a view of the interior of the state tapestry works, full of light and movement, in which the artist contrasts the peasant spinners of the foreground with the aristocratic visitors and luxurious tapestry to the rear.

The tapestry shown represents Titian's Rape of Europa (which was in the Spanish royal collection); its inclusion was no doubt a homage to the Venetian master.
