Hildebrand, Adolf von (1847-1921)

German sculptor and writer on art. His desire for classical simplicity can be seen in such works as the bronze statuette Sleeping Shepherd Boy, shown at the Vienna Exhibition 1873, and the Wittelsbach Fountain in Munich 1895. His influential book The Problem of Form appeared 1893.

Hildebrand, born in Marburg, studied first at Nürnberg and Munich, and then in Rome, and spent 18 years in Florence, working chiefly on portrait sculpture. After his years in Italy, he worked in many parts of Germany, and designed fountains in Jena, Worms, and Strasbourg.
