Hill, Alfred (1870–1960)

Australian composer, conductor, and teacher. His early career was in Leipzig, Germany. He moved to New Zealand in 1902 and became influenced by Maori music. He was professor at New South Wales Conservatory 1915–35.

Opera

eight operas, including Tapu (1903), A Moorish Maid (1905), and Giovanni, the Sculptor (1914).

Orchestral and chamber

ten symphonies (1896–1958); 17 string quartets, six sonatas for violin and piano.
