Hiller, Lejaren (1924– )

US composer. He learned from Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt and co-created the first computer composition, Illiac Suite (1957). He directed the experimental music studio at the University of Illinois 1958–68, and was appointed professor of music at the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1968.

Works

two symphonies (1953, 1960), piano concerto (1949), seven string quartets (1949–79), six piano sonatas (1946–72); Computer Cantata (1963), seven Electronic Studies (1963), Rage over the Lost Beethoven (1972); The Fox Trots Again for chamber orchestra (1985). He collaborated with Cage on HPSCHD for 1–7 harpsichords and 1–51 tapes (1968).
