Hillsboro

City in Marion County, east-central Kansas, 64 km/40 mi south of Abilene; population (1990) 2,700. Hillsboro was settled in the late 1870s by German-speaking Mennonite farmers who emigrated from Russia and Poland.

Hillsboro is now a centre for trading the wheat, corn, and livestock produced in the surrounding area. Tabor College (founded 1908) is situated in the city, and the Marion Lake reservoir and dam are immediately to the northeast.

Residential town in Hillsborough County, southern New Hampshire; population (1990) 4,500. The town, which includes Hillsboro village, stands on the Contoocook River, 32 km/20 mi west-southwest of Concord. Franklin Pierce, the fourteenth president of the USA, was born here in 1804.

Hillsboro is a small commercial and agricultural centre producing textiles, clothing, lumber, dairy products, poultry, and livestock. The Pierce Homestead, Franklin Pierce's childhood home, is situated between Upper and Lower Hillsboro villages, near Franklin Pierce Lake.

City and seat of Highland County, in southwestern Ohio, 87 km/54 mi east of Cincinnati and 52 km/32 mi west-southwest of Chillicothe; population (2000) 6,400. The forts of several ancient Moundbuilder peoples (various American Indian peoples who built earth mounds) are sited nearby.

Hillsboro, which stands on a high plateau, is a highway junction and trade centre for the surrounding region, whose economy is based on dairy, grain, and tobacco farming. Local manufactures include foundry products, farm machinery, and clothing, and limestone is also quarried in the area. The Women's Temperance Crusade was founded here in 1873. Rocky Fork State Park at Rocky Fork Lake lies some 6 km/4 mi to the southeast of the city.

Hillsboro

City and seat of Washington County, northwestern Oregon, 21 km/13 mi west of Portland; population (2000) 70,200. Founded in 1841, it is the processing, packaging, and shipping centre of a rich farming region known for its filberts, apples, wheat, and dairy products. High-tech industries are also based in the city. There are a number of vineyards in the surrounding area.
