Hillsdale

City and seat of Hillsdale County, in southern Michigan; population (1990) 8,200. Hillsdale is located on Baw Beese Lake and the St Joseph River, 40 km/25 mi south-southwest of Jackson. This trading and manufacturing centre, founded in 1834, manufactures car and aircraft parts, food products, and brooms.

Hillsdale is a centre for year-round recreation on the surrounding 350 lakes, and the site of Hillsdale College (founded 1844). The sites of ancient Moundbuilder peoples (various American Indian peoples who built earth mounds) have been found nearby.

Borough in Bergen County, northeastern New Jersey, 14 km/9 mi north of Hackensack, on Pascack Brook; population (1990) 9,800. Primarily residential, it is also a market centre for an agricultural region.
