Hilo

Unincorporated community and seat of Hawaii County, Hawaii; population (2000) 40,800. Hilo is situated on Hilo Bay, on the northeastern coast of the island of Hawaii, 322 km/200 mi southeast of Honolulu. A former whaling port on a deepwater harbour, it is the island's shipping and service centre and its principal seaport.

Hilo is a tourist base for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is located in the southwest. The rainy, tropical climate fosters a thriving orchid and anthurium industry. Hilo has bulk sugar loading facilities, and its other exports include macadamia nuts and cattle. A branch of the University of Hawaii, established in 1970, is located here.
