Hincmar (c. 806–882)

French prelate. He became abbot of Compiègne and of St Germain and finally, in 845, archbishop of Reims. As metropolitan he excommunicated his suffragan (assistant bishop), Rothad, bishop of Soissons but eventually reinstated him in obedience to the pope. Yet, after King Lothair of Lorraine's death, he secured the succession of Charles the Bald despite the objection of Pope Adrian. He was educated in the abbey of St Denis.
