Hinds, Samuel Archibald Anthony (1943– )| Guyanese engineer and politician, president March–December 1997 and prime minister for much of the time from1992. A chemical engineer by profession, Hinds worked in the bauxite industry for 25 years before being named prime minister in October 1992 when former President Cheddi Jagan, led the People's Progressive Party (PPP), in alliance with Hinds' Civic group, to electoral victory. Hinds also headed the ministry of public works, communications and regional development since 1992. |
| On Jagan's death, in March 1997, Hinds stood down as prime minister and became interim president until December 1997, when he was replaced by Janet Jagan (Jagan's widow). He resumed his position as prime minister, but was briefly replaced for three days in August 1999 by Bharrat Jagdeo. But on 11 August 1999 Jagdeo replaced Jagan as president and Hinds returned as prime minister. His government was re-elected in August 2006. |
| Hinds studied engineering at Queen's College, Georgetown and University of New Brunswick, Canada. He then returned to Guyana and, from 1967, held various positions in the aluminium and bauxite industries until October 1992. He was active in the Guyana association of professional engineers and the national science research councils of Guyana. |
| Hinds did not enter political life until 1990, when he joined the Guyanese Action for Reform and Democracy (GUARD). He was soon elected to its chair and accepted an invitation to work with Cheddi Jagan and the PPP. |
