Hinds County

Administrative district of west-central Mississippi; area 2,266 sq km/875 sq mi, population (1990) 254,400. It is bordered on the east by the Pearl River and on the northwest by the Big Black River. It is by far the most populous county in the state, with dual seats at Jackson (the state capital) and Raymond.

Jackson, Mississippi's largest city, is in the northeast of Hinds County, with a metropolitan area that extends west and south; its many industries and commercial activities dominate the county's economy. In the rest of the county, there are extensive timber resources and agricultural activity. Cotton, vegetables, cattle, and poultry are produced, processed, and shipped from here.
