Hingis, Martina (1980– )Czech-born Swiss tennis player. In 1996 she became the youngest-ever winner of a Grand Slam title when she won the Wimbledon women's doubles title at the age of 15 years 282 days. Hingis was the youngest player to be ranked as number one in the world since the women's official rankings began. In 1997, at 16 years 279 days she became the youngest winner of a singles title at Wimbledon since Lottie Dod won the women's singles in 1887. In the same year she became the US Open and Australian Open singles champion. In 2006 she won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open with Mahesh Bhupathi of India. It was her first mixed double title and her 15th Grand Slam title in total. She won the women's singles at the Australian Open for the third year in a row in January 1999, and was runner-up in 2001. She also achieved her third successive doubles title at the same championships. She announced her retirement in February 2003, aged just 22, due to severe ankle problems, but returned to competition three years later and in May 2006 she won her first tournament in more than four years when she beat Dinara Safina in the final of the Italian Open.
