Also found in: Wikipedia 0.03 sec.

Hipparchus (c. 555-514 BC)

Younger son of the Athenian tyrant Pisistratus, brother of Hippias (the family is known as the Pisistratids). In 527 BC the two brothers succeeded their father as tyrants of Athens, but Hippias was the senior partner. He was assassinated by Harmodius and Aristogeiton 514 BC.

Hipparchus inherited his father's literary tastes, and several distinguished poets, including Simonides of Ceos and Anacreon, enjoyed his patronage.
