HipparcosSatellite launched by the European Space Agency to orbit the Earth from 1989 to 1993. Named after the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, it was the world's first astrometry satellite, mapping the precise positions, distances, colours, brightnesses, and apparent motions of stars. This resulted in a catalogue of more than 2.5 million stars, published in 2000. How to thank TFD for its existence?
