Hippolyte et Aricie

Opera in five acts by Jean-Philippe Rameau (libretto by S J de Pellegrin), first produced at the Paris Opéra, France, on 1 October 1733. In the story, Hippolytus and Aricia are in love. Believing her husband Theseus to be dead, Phaedra confesses love for her stepson Hippolytus, who rejects her. Theseus returns and condemns his son for what appears to be an attack on Phaedra. Hippolytus is carried off by a sea monster, but survives and is reunited with Aricia.

Premiered in 1733 in Paris, Jean-Philippe Rameau's first opera, the five-act lyrical tragedy, Hippolyte et Aricie, was brilliantly revived in Toulouse's Theatre du Capitole in March.
Operatic scenes by Charpentier and Rameau formed the backbone of her programme, each half of which approached one of their great tragic heroines - Charpentier's Médée, Phèdre in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie - via songs, instrumental suites and dances.
Indeed, the quality of the recording rivals my longtime favorite Rameau recording of Hippolyte et Aricie with La Petite Bande on EMI Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
