Hippolytus

In Greek mythology, the charioteer son of Theseus, loved by his stepmother Phaedra. Enraged by his rejection, she falsely accused him of dishonouring her and committed suicide, turning Theseus against his son. The sea god Poseidon, who owed Theseus a wish, sent a monster as Hippolytus drove on the shore near Troezen; the frightened chariot horses dragged him to death. His story was dramatized in Hippolytus by Euripides .

In some traditions, the innocent Hippolytus was revived by Asclepius, god of medicine, at the behest of the goddess Artemis. According to Roman legend, he was renamed Virbius by Diana (Greek Artemis) and transported to Africa.

His mother was variously represented as Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons (a race of female warriors), or her sister Antiope.
