Hirsch, Maurice, Baron de Hirsch (1831-1896)

German-born Jewish philanthropist. As an international banker he amassed a huge fortune, especially by financing railways in Austria-Hungary. He founded the Jewish Colonization Association, and endowed it with capital of £9 million; the association's aim was to make it possible for the persecuted Jews of Russia to emigrate. Hirsch was born in Munich, Germany.
