Twentieth century historian of ideas Isaiah Berlin wrote: "Only barbarians are not curious about where they come from, how they came to be, where they are, where they appear to be going, whether they wish to go there, and if so, why, and if not, why not.
95 A historian of ideas, Freudenthal (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) assembles 16 papers originally published between 1986 and 2002 on socio-cultural considerations of science in the medieval Hebrew traditions; Maimonides, Gersonides, and some others; and the reverberations of Greek theory of matter in Arabic and Hebrew.
Himmelfarb takes issue with Berlin from time to time, but her obvious debt to him reminds us that he is by far the more accomplished historian of ideas.
