Hitchcock, Edward

Hitchcock, Edward (1793–1864)

US geologist and educator. He was professor 1825–64 and president 1845–54 of Amherst College, and served as trustee and lecturer at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now College) 1836–64. Hitchcock's research as state geologist of Massachusetts 1830 and Vermont 1857–61 resulted in his major contributions to the geology, glaciology, and palaeontology of New England. His pioneer studies of fossil dinosaur footprints founded the science of ichnology.

He was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts. An ordained Congregational minister 1821–25, he remained a lifelong classicist and theologian.
