Hoare-Laval Pact

Plan for a peaceful settlement to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in October 1935. It was devised by Samuel Hoare (1880-1959), British foreign secretary, and Pierre Laval, French premier, at the request of the League of Nations. Realizing no European country was willing to go to war over Ethiopia, Hoare and Laval proposed official recognition of Italian claims. Public outcry in Britain against the pact's seeming approval of Italian aggression was so great that the pact had to be disowned and Hoare was forced to resign.
