Hobart Pasha (1822–1886)

Admiral of the Turkish Fleet. Having attained the rank of captain in the British navy, he retired in 1863 and joined the Turkish navy in 1867. As a blockade-runner during the American Civil War he gained considerable distinction, but his daring and strategic ability were most in evidence during his blockade of Crete at the time of the insurrection, and during the Russo-Turkish War in 1873, when he cleared the Black Sea of the enemy.
