City in Lea County, southeastern New Mexico; population (2000) 28,700. The city is located in the High Plains, 3 km/2 mi west of the Texas border and 130 km/80 mi northwest of Midland, and is the centre of petroleum production in the state.

Hobbs is surrounded by irrigated farms and ranches, and grew dramatically after the discovery of oil and natural gas here in 1928. There are also potash deposits to the southwest. The College of the Southwest (founded 1956) and New Mexico Junior College (founded 1965) are situated here.
