Hochschild, Arlie Russell (1940– )

US sociologist. Her work focuses on gender roles, family dynamics, retirement, and the psychology of work. Her articles include the influential Emotion Work, Feeling Rules and Social Structure (1979). She has also written several books, including The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling (1983), The Unexpected Community (1973), The Second Shift: Working Parents and the Revolution at Home (co-authored) (1989), and The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work (1997).

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she earned graduate degrees at the University of California, Berkeley, where she later joined the faculty in 1971.
