Hochzeit des Camacho, Die

Opera by Felix Mendelssohn (libretto by C A L von Lichtenstein, based on Cervantes' Don Quixote), first produced at the Schauspielhaus, Berlin, Germany, on 29 April 1827. The story tells how Quiteria loves Basilio but must marry the rich Camacho. At the wedding Basilio feigns attempted suicide; Camacho allows him to marry Quiteria so that he may die a happy man. The subterfuge is revealed, but Camacho accepts the lovers' union.
