Hoddesdon

Town in Hertfordshire, England, 6 km/4 mi southeast of Hertford; population (2001) 12,900.

The 17th-century writer Izaak Walton used to fish here on the River Lea at Hoddesdon. At the old Rye House, 2 km/1 mi away, was planned the abortive assassination of Charles II and his brother James in 1683 (see Rye House Plot). Hoddesdon was a coaching station on the old Cambridge Road.
