Hodgkin, Howard

    0.02 sec.

Hodgkin, Howard (1932– )

English painter. Influenced by Indian miniatures, his small pictures are full of movement and colour, the paint frequently spreading over the frame. Though they have a specific subject – often an encounter between friends – they are abstract in appearance, the artist slowly reducing an incident or scene to a highly personal language of a few broad brush strokes and patterned dabs. An example is Dinner at Smith Square (1975–79; Tate Gallery, London). He won the Turner Prize in 1985 and was knighted in 1992.
