Hodgkin, Thomas (1798-1866)

English physician who first recognized Hodgkin's disease, a rare form of cancer mainly affecting the lymph nodes and spleen. He pioneered the use of the stethoscope in the UK. He was also the first person to stress the importance of postmortem examinations.

Hodgkin was born in London and studied at Guy's Hospital, London, and at Edinburgh, and lectured at Guy's 1827-37. He was active in the Aborigines Protection Society, and died in Jaffa (now in Israel) while on a mercy mission.

His paper describing Hodgkin's disease was published in 1832.
