Hodgson, Alfreda (1940–1992)

English contralto. She studied in Manchester and sang in concert from 1961, notably in oratorio and in the Passions of Bach. She was much admired in Mahler, singing in the second symphony under Klemperer, the eighth with Colin Davis and Das Lied von der Erde/The Song of The Earth with Simon Rattle. She was also valued in Handel's Messiah, Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, and the Brahms's Alto Rhapsody. She gave US concerts with the Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras and the Cleveland Orchestra.
