Hoefnagel, Georg

    0.01 sec.

Hoefnagel, Georg (1542–1600)

Flemish draughtsman. The son of an Antwerp diamond dealer, Hoefnagel travelled extensively before entering into the service of the wealthy Fugger family in Germany and eventually of Rudolf II in Prague (from 1591). His travels, often accompanied by his friend, the geographer Ortelius, resulted in his topographical drawings, engravings of which appeared in Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg's six-volume Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572–1618).

His travels included visits to Spain and France during 1561–67, England in 1569, and Italy in 1577. He specialized in botanical drawings, some which were made for the emperor Rudolf; for him he also illustrated a calligraphy primer by the Hungarian scholar, Georg Bocskay.

Hoefnagel's son Jakob Hoefnagel (1575–c. 1630) followed him as a miniature painter in the imperial service.
