Hoengen, Elisabeth (1906-1997)

German mezzo-soprano. She made her debut in Wuppertal in 1933, then sang in Düsseldorf and Dresden and, from 1943, Vienna. Her roles there included the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman without a Shadow. She appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1947 with the Vienna Company as Dorabella and Marcellina, and at Salzburg 1948-59 in operas by Strauss, Britten, and Erbse. Her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in June 1952 as Herodias.
