Hoffman, Grace (1921– )

US mezzo-soprano. She studied in New York and Milan, and sang small roles in the USA and Europe from 1951. She appeared in Stuttgart and at La Scala, Milan, from 1955, and at Bayreuth 1957–70 as Brangaene, Waltraute, and Fricka. Her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1958, and she performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, 1959–71, making her debut as Eboli. She was appointed professor of voice at the Stuttgart Hochschule in 1978, and sang in Zimmermann's Die Soldaten/The Soldiers at Strasbourg in 1988.
