Hoffman Estates

Village in Cook County, northeastern Illinois; population (1990) 46,600. This residential suburb, which lies 40 km/25 mi northwest of Chicago, was founded in 1959. During the 1980s, there was a boom in commercial development along Interstate 90 (the Northwest Tollway), which runs through the northern half of the village. The outdoor Poplar Creek Music Theatre is located here.
