Hofstadter, Richard

Hofstadter, Richard (1916–1970)

US historian. He was professor of American history at Columbia University, New York, from 1859 until his death. His publications include The Age of Reform 1955, Anti-Intellectualism in American Life 1963, and America at 1750 1971.

Hofstadter was born in Buffalo, New York and educated at the University of Buffalo and Columbia University. He taught initially at City College, New York, 1941 and the Unveristy of Maryland 1942–46, then returned to Columbia University, where he became a professor 1952. He was professor of American history and institutions at Cambridge, England, 1958–59. He won a Pulitzer Prize in History 1956 and in General Non-fiction 1964.

His other publications include Social Darwinism in American Thought 1944, The American Political Tradition 1948, The Paranoid Style in American Politics 1965, The Progressive Historians 1968, and The Idea of a Party System 1969.
