Hogg, Douglas Martin (1945- )

British Conservative politician. His ministerial appointments include trade and industry 1989-90 and the foreign and Commonwealth office 1990-95. As minister for agriculture, fisheries, and food 1995-97, he was given the difficult task of directing Britain's agricultural policy in Europe following a crisis over the safety of British beef in 1996.

Hogg was born in London, the son of the distinguished Conservative politician Quintin Hogg (Lord Hailsham). Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he trained as a barrister and was appointed QC (Queen's Counsel) in 1990. He entered parliament in 1979 as Conservative MP for Grantham and was parliamentary private secretary to Leon Brittain 1982-86.
