Hogwood, Christopher (1941– )

English harpsichordist, musicologist, and conductor. In 1967 he was co-founder with David Munrow of the Early Music Consort. He played with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields and in 1973 founded the Academy of Ancient Music; giving ‘authentic’ performances with original instruments, including a complete recording of Mozart's symphonies.

He studied at Cambridge and in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). In 1974 he toured the USA, and in 1979 was appointed professor-in-residence at Sydney University, Australia. He was music director of St Paul's Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota, from 1987 and principal guest from 1992. He has edited works by Purcell, J C Bach, and William Croft, and published a book on Handel.
