Hohenfriedburg, Battle of

During the War of the Austrian Succession, Prussian victory over the allied Austrians and Saxons 3 June 1745 56 km/35 mi southwest of Breslau in Prussian Silesia (now Wrocław, Poland). The allied force under Charles of Lorraine lost 4,000 killed and wounded, 7,000 prisoners, 66 guns, and their regimental colours out of an original force of 85,000. The Prussians, led by Frederick the Great, lost just over 2,000 killed and wounded out of 65,000.

Frederick had been watching Charles march toward Silesia, while keeping his own army concealed. Seeing his opportunity, he manoeuvred his army and guns into position during the night and at dawn attacked the allied left wing, putting the Saxons to flight before the Austrians could move to their assistance. He then rapidly swung and attacked the Austrians. They put up a strong resistance but a charge of the Bayreuth Dragoons broke their line and the battle was over.
