Hoi An

Port in Quang Nam province, central Vietnam, situated 23 km/14 mi south of Da Nang; population (1991 est) 69,900. Exports include local products such as sugar, tea, and silk; the main industry is dressmaking. It was one of Southeast Asia's major international ports from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

During the 17th century Hoi An was the trade centre between Cochin China and Japan, and had a considerable Japanese merchant community.
