Hokan

Major American Indian language family of the southwest USA and northwest Mexico, in particular the Baja California region. Branches include Tequistlatecan and Seri in Mexico; Karok-Shasta and Pomo in California; and the Yuman group, consisting of the Paipai (Mexico), Cocopa and Kumiai (Mexico and California), and Mojave, Maricopa, Yuman (or Quechan), and Havasupai-Walapai-Yavapai (California and Arizona). Hokan languages near extinction include Pomo Kashaya (a Hokan-Russian mix), Southern Pomo and Washo in California, and Kiliwi in Mexico; others, such as Cochimí, Chumash, and some Pomo dialects, are already extinct.
