Holbrook

City and seat of Navajo County, in northeastern Arizona; population (2000) 4,900. Holbrook lies on Interstate 40 and the Little Colorado River, 145 km/90 mi east-southeast of Flagstaff. The town was founded in 1881, with the arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad.

Holbrook is a centre for trade and the gateway to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. The reservations of the Hopi and Navajo native peoples are situated north of the city. The surrounding area produces livestock, poultry, and dairy goods. Near Holbrook, there is a gas-field for the extraction of helium.

Holbrook

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 11,100. Holbrook is a residential suburb that lies 24 km/15 mi south-southeast of Boston, and just north of Brockton. Originally part of Braintree, it was a centre of the shoe industry in the 19th century. It was incorporated in 1872.

The town was formerly called East Randolph, but was renamed after Elisha N Holbrook, who provided funds for public buildings. Holbrook was badly damaged by fire in 1877.

Unincorporated village within Islip town, Suffolk County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 25,300. Holbrook is situated on Long Island, immediately east of Long Island MacArthur Airport, and 8 km/5 mi north of Sayville. It is primarily a residential area, with some high-tech industry.
