Holl, Frank (1845–1888)

English painter and illustrator. He turned from sombre subjects – for example, Newgate Committed for Trial 1878 (Royal Holloway College, London) – to portraiture, his sitters including the Prince of Wales and the politician John Bright.

Born in London, son of the engraver Francis Holl, he became a student at the Royal Academy schools 1860, and from 1864 was a regular contributor to the Royal Academy. As an illustrator he was also a regular contributor to the journal Graphic.
