Holland, Clifford

Holland, Clifford (1883–1924)

US civil engineer. As chief engineer for the New York State and New Jersey Interstate Bridge and Tunnel Commissions 1919–24, he planned and built the first twin-tube, underwater vehicular tunnel, named after him in 1924 and opened in 1927, crossing under the Hudson River between lower Manhattan and New Jersey.

Born in Somerset, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard in 1906 and became the tunnel engineer 1914–16 and the division engineer 1916–19 for the Public Service Commission.
