Holmboe, Vagn (1909–1996)

Danish composer. Denmark's most distinguished composer after Carl Nielsen, Holmboe published 12 symphonies, 13 chamber concertos, 20 string quartets, and many other pieces, including the Requiem for Nietzsche (1963–64). With his wife, the Romanian pianist Meta Graf, he explored Romanian folk music.

He studied with Knud Jeppesen (1892–1974) and Finn Høffding in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Ernst Toch in Berlin, Germany. From 1940 to 1949 he taught at the Institute for the Blind in Copenhagen, and thereafter at the Copenhagen Conservatory.

13 chamber concertos (1939–56), 20 string quartets (1948–75), three violin sonatas.
